British Or Spanish? Holiday Home Insurance Policy

Organising all the paper work and legalities for your new Spanish holiday home may have seemed like a real chore, on the plus side your Spanish has vastly improved but on the downside you’re probably very exhausted and fed up of dealing with Spanish red tape. Before you put your feet up and enjoy a nice glass of sangria on your new veranda you might want to consider what you’d do if you suddenly had everything you’ve just worked so hard to achieve taken away from you. Don’t forget to insure your new holiday home.?

When it comes to insurance for holiday homes in Spain it may often appear cheaper to take a Spanish policy rather than a British one but there are a few things you might want to consider first. The old saying you pay peanuts, you get monkeys could easily apply if you’re tempted to take a cheaper quote.. The main difference between a standard English holiday home insurance policy and a native Spanish one is the level of cover that comes as standard. If you leave your property vacant for more than a month at a time you’ll probably find you’ve invalidated your policy, a policy from a UK based provider will normally cover that as standard.. Check your policy covers your entire property and not just the main building, things like garages and sheds may not be covered.. Your provider of your house insurance in Spain will often stipulate you must use a certain type shutter or lock and when you’re going to be hundreds of miles away this is a hard thing to check. It’s one thing to leave for work on the morning wondering if you remembered to lock that back window; it’s a lot harder to check when you’re two time zones away.? Are you sure you can trust everyone you let use your holiday home that they’ll lock up properly behind them? A simple slip up and you may find you’ve just invalidated your entire insurance policy, you know you’re going to be more covered with the UK one..

We would take so many of these things for granted which is why most the little details missed out of a Spanish holiday home insurance policy would be covered by a British policy, all in your native tongue.. Even if you’re completely confident in your Spanish language, you may not know their legal and insurance policies as well as you’d know any British ones. Don’t forget that when something looks too good to be true it normally is..
